Axle Counters: Enhancing Indian Railways Safety

An axle counter is a vital component in Indian railways signaling systems. Axel Counters are used to detect the status of a track section whether it’s clear or occupied by a train. Let’s know the workings of this unassuming yet crucial device.

  1. Wheel Sensor are Positioned at both ends of a track section, the wheel sensor detects individual axles as a train passes.Evaluator Unit counts the axles entering and leaving the section. It may also convert analog signals from the axle sensor into digital data.
  2. As a train’s axles cross the starting wheel sensor, the counter increments. The axle counter sensor comprises two independent sensors by allowing it to determine the train’s direction and speed. At the section’s end the system compares the axle count with the initial count. If they match, the section is considered clear.
  3. Axle counters replace traditional track circuits by ensuring safe spacing between trains. They activate warning equipment at level crossings, safeguarding pedestrians and vehicles. Axle counters help sort train coaches efficiently.
