The history of Indian Railways traces back to 1832 when the first railway line was proposed in Madras. In 1837, a steam-powered train operated between Red Hills and Chintadripet in Madras, primarily for transporting granite.
Fast forward to 1951, when Indian Railways was established by merging 42 different railway companies spanning 55,000 km.
