The Evolution of Monorail in Indian Railways

The history of monorail in India dates back to the early 20th century. The first monorail was introduced by the Tata group in 1902 at their tea estate in Munnar, Kerala.

This system was later converted into a light railway in 1908. Another significant monorail system was the Patiala State Monorail Trainways (PSMT), built by the Maharaja of Patiala in Punjab.

Operational from 1907 to 1927, it served the people of Punjab efficiently. In modern times, the Mumbai Monorail, inaugurated in 2014, became the first monorail system in an urban setting in India.
