The Pamban Bridge, inaugurated on February 24, 1914, stands as India’s first sea bridge. Connecting Rameswaram on Pamban Island to Mandapam on the mainland, it spans 6,776 feet (2,065 meters). Initially the longest sea bridge in India, it held that title until the Bandra–Worli Sea Link opened in 2010.
This remarkable rail bridge rests on concrete piers but features a unique double-leaf bascule section that can be raised to allow ships and barges to pass through. Until 1988, it was the sole surface link connecting Rameswaram to mainland India. Recently, a new bridge has been planned to replace the existing one, ensuring continued connectivity and safety.
